Moms of Multiples are High Risk for PPD

There are numerous reasons why moms of multiples are high risk for postpartum depression.  Here are a few:

High rate of preterm deliveries

Mothers of preterm infants experience a higher incidence of depression than mothers of full-term infants.  Multiples are notorious for being preterm.

Sleep deprivation

It’s difficult enough getting required sleep with a single screaming baby, let alone with many mouths crying and eating throughout the night.

Social isolation

Because organizing oneself, the babies, and all of the baby equipment takes so much energy, it’s challenging to meet anyone out of the house.  Many moms of multiples feel that it’s just not worth it.

Demands of the babies

When one is napping, the other one (or more) is fussing.  At least temporarily, sleeping and feeding schedules are close to impossible (and maybe not the mom’s style or choice).  If she is breastfeeding or pumping, she may feel like a continuous milk machine.
